March 14, 2005 WIC Update

1. The National Maternal Nutrition Intensive Course offers continuing education on topics related to preconceptional, prenatal and postpartum nutrition issues of women as well as information on lactation and infant nutrition. Following is information concerning the 2005 National Maternal Nutrition Intensive Course, July 11-13, 2005, in Minneapolis, MN. at the  University of Minnesota, West Bank Campus, Hubert H Humphrey Institute.
   
   Highlights of the program include:

• Bariatric surgery - two presentations will provide information on pregnancy outcomes as well as nutrition recommendations for pregnant and breastfeeding women who had previously undergone bariatric surgery.
• Weight gain - presentations will provide research data on effects of weight gain on low birth weight rates among pregnant adolescents as well as a discussion on the effectiveness of weight gain recommendations for pregnant women.
• Breastfeeding promotion - a model program for promoting breastfeeding among low income women will be presented as well as research on factors related to breastfeeding initiation and continuation in this population.
• Fetal origins of adult disease - an update of research on how fetal nutrition status affects risk of disease during adulthood
• The culture of poverty - an interactive workshop will provide attendees the opportunity to learn about differences in communication and coping strategies among different SES groups as well as techniques on how to bridge the gaps between middle class values and those of low income or immigrant populations.
