  1. The Program for Dietetic Interns (PDI) is taking applications for the 2006 - 2007 class year. A few changes are being made to the Program for this class year.; First, up to four interns will be selected from the pre-select option, instead of only two as in previous years. This is advantageous for employees of LWPs, who are eligible to participate in the pre-select option. The deadline for the pre-select option is Dec. 31. Second, there is no fee for those interns who, upon graduation, agree to enter into or resume employment with the LWP for a minimum of 18 months. A fee will apply to all other interns. Third, the "new" application form is required. See attached. For more information, visit our website at dietetic interns.
  2. The following information is for free resources:  FREE “HEALTHY STEPS” RESOURCES AVAILABLE ONLINE - The “Healthy Steps for Young Children” program, developed by the pediatrics faculty at Boston University School of Medicine, provides materials for parents and health professionals to promote child development and preventative care. To make these materials more widely available, the Commonwealth Fund now sponsors free access to some of these resources online, in both English and Spanish. These include check-lists and prompt sheets that prepare parents for well-child visits and provide child-rearing advice; parent handouts that cover a wide range of medical, developmental, and practical issues; and quick check sheets for clinicians, covering developmental and behavioral issues. To learn more, visit http://www.healthysteps.org.
  3. Please enjoy the summer issue of the Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention NewsLEADer. This may also be found on our website at lead. Thanks and Enjoy!
  4. The Injury and Violence Prevention Program is honored to share with Missouri WIC providers the No Means No Poster. doc The No Means No poster was developed as a visual reminder that there is NEVER an excuse or invitation to rape. Women and men do not “ask” to be raped. Please share this poster with clients, employees, and the general public. Copies of the poster may be requested from the Injury and Violence Prevention Program by calling 573-751-6215 or emailing April Thornsberry at april.thornsberry@health.mo.gov. In addition, a PDF file is attached so that the poster may be printed locally. The Injury and Violence Prevention Program requests that the program be credited on any reproductions. Victims of sexual assault may access information and referrals through the national sexual assault hotline, 1-800-656-HOPE, or through the department’s TEL-LINK line, 1-800-TEL-LINK. Facts about sexual assault:

    • Today, 4 people in Missouri are going to report a rape. Those 4 people are going to be just like you and me. In fact, they could be you or me. Rape has nothing to do with who we are. Rape has nothing to do with the way we look. Rape has nothing to do with how old we are. Rape has nothing to do with what we wear.
    • Rape is coerced sex achieved against someone’s will, regardless of any existing or previous relationship between the rapist and the victim. Knowing, dating, being related to or marriage is not a license to rape.
    • In 2004, 1332 rapes were reported to law enforcement in Missouri.
    • One Missourian is raped every 6½ hours.
    • 61 % of rapes are NOT reported.
    • 70% of females and 74% of males who are raped know the perpetrator
    • 1 in 6 (17%) victims of sexual assault is under the age of 12.
    • 14.4% of Missouri high school senior girls reported they had been forced to have sexual intercourse when they did not want to.
    • 1 in 7 American women and one of every 33 American men has been a victim of sexual assault.

Please contact the Injury and Violence Prevention Program for more information about sexual assault prevention at 573-751-6215. See attached No Means No poster
