WIC Basic Orientation/MOWINS Training

Training Overview:

The Orientation to WIC module is located here and must be completed before attending all training sessions.

WIC Trainings Descriptions:

Clerical Training

Target Audience:
New trainees or use as “refresher” training for current staff or staff returning from a break in service over 1 year. Required for clerical, HPAs, WIC Certifiers and CPA staff (physicians, nutritionists, registered dietitians, dietetic technicians and registered nurses).
Course Description:

This course will provide an overview of the program policies/procedures and services the Missouri WIC Program provides to women, infant and children applicants and/or participants. This training has consists of the following components:

  1. Complete the self-paced Clerical module and hands-on exercises on-the-job (OJT) in your agency prior to attending the system training.
  2. Attend the Missouri WIC Information Network System (MOWINS) training in Jefferson City. This training is scheduled for three days.

Steps for completing the required pre-training materials prior to attending the MOWINS training. First, complete the required self-paced clerical training module. Once the module is completed the next step would be to complete the Post Test and submit the Verification of Complete Form to the State WIC Nutrition Trainer.

Health Professional Assistant (HPA) Training*

Target Audience:
New trainees or use as “refresher” training for current staff or staff returning from a break in service over 1 year. Required for HPAs, WIC Certifiers and CPA staff (physicians, nutritionists, registered dietitians, dietetic technicians and registered nurses).
Course Description:

Training includes clerical responsibilities and an overview of the procedures for performing anthropometric measurements and hematological assessment in the WIC program. This training has consists of the following components:

  1. Complete the self-paced Clerical and HPA modules and hands-on exercises on-the-job (OJT) in your agency prior to attending the system training.
  2. Attend the Missouri WIC Information Network System (MOWINS) training in Jefferson City. This training is scheduled for three days.

Once the modules are completed the next step would be to complete the Post Tests and submit the Verification of Complete Form to the State WIC Nutrition Trainer.

WIC Certifier Training*

Target Audience:
New trainees or use as “refresher” training for current staff or staff returning from a break in service over 1 year. Required for WIC Certifiers and CPA staff (physicians, nutritionists, registered dietitians, dietetic technicians, and registered nurses). Mandatory retraining every 5 years for WIC Certifiers.
Course Description:

Training includes clerical and HPA responsibilities and in addition: more detail instructions regarding how to identify and assign appropriate risk factors, how to assess the nutrition assessment forms, breastfeeding support, how to assign appropriate food prescriptions and provide the initial nutrition education contact to WIC participants. This training has consists of the following components:

  1. Complete the self-paced Clerical, HPA and WIC Certifier modules and hands-on exercises on-the-job (OJT) in your agency prior to attending the WIC Paraprofessional/Professional training in Jefferson City.
  2. Attend the face-to-face WIC Paraprofessional/Professional training in Jefferson City. This training is scheduled for 1 ½ days.
  3. Attend the Missouri WIC Information Network System (MOWINS) training in Jefferson City. This training is scheduled for three days.
Note: WIC Para/Professional and MOWINS trainings are held the same week for a total of 4 ½ days (Monday PM – Friday).

Competent Professional Authority Training (CPA)*

Target Audience:
New trainees or use as “refresher” training for current staff or staff returning from a break in service over 1 year. Required for CPA staff (physicians, nutritionists, registered dietitians, dietetic technicians, and registered nurses).
Course Description:

Training includes all information covered in Clerical, HPA and WIC Certifier responsibilities in addition to more in depth information on the nutrition assessment forms, nutrition tailoring of the food prescriptions, medical documentation requirements, high risk care plans, setting nutrition and/or heath goals, nutrition education and counseling. This training has consists of the following components:

  1. Complete the self-paced clerical, HPA, WIC Certifier and CPA modules and hands-on exercises on-the-job (OJT) in your agency prior to attending the WIC Paraprofessional/Professional training in Jefferson City.
  2. Attend the face-to-face WIC Paraprofessional/Professional training in Jefferson City. This training is scheduled for 1 ½ days.
  3. Attend the Missouri WIC Information Network System (MOWINS) training in Jefferson City. This training is scheduled for three days.

Missouri WIC Information Network System Training (MOWINS)*

Target Audience:
New trainees or use as “refresher” training for current staff or staff returning from a break in service over 1 year. Required for Clerical, HPAs, WIC Certifiers and CPA staff (physicians, nutritionists, registered dietitians, dietetic technicians, and registered nurses).
Course Description:
This hands-on training will provide LWP staff with the skills they need to navigate the data system. On the first day, staff will learn how to search for clients, complete a prescreening on a new applicant and complete the certification for new applicants. On the second day, staff will gain experience in recertifying participants, processing an infant reassessment, printing Food Instruments (FI) and problem solving the various FI issues. By the end of the third day, they will be able to schedule clients into a variety of appointments, as well as print the correct notices, perform transfers, terminate and reinstate participants.
