Fit WIC Missouri
FY2007 Goals, Strategies, Framework, and Evaluation
Fit WIC Missouri FY07 adapted parts of the national model with two primary goals:
- To decrease the percentage of children, 2-5 years old, who are overweight (BMI-for-age >95th percentile) from 14.2% (2004 PedNSS) to <10% by 2010 in children participating in Missouri WIC.
- To decrease the percent of children, 2-5 years old, who are at risk for overweight (BMI-for-age >85th percentile to <95th percentile) from 16.6% (2004 PedNSS) to <10% by 2010 in children participating in Missouri WIC.
Strategies:
- <LWP> will participate in Fit WIC Missouri, a program to prevent overweight in children.
- <LWP> will involve < at least 50% > of this agencies WIC participants aged 2-5 years in Fit WIC Missouri activities.
Evaluation:
Data and photos are included in the complete FY07 evaluation report. Forty-six agencies volunteered to participate in the Fit WIC Missouri program in 2007. The four areas of involvement from which goals were selected are: 1) Nutrition, 2) Physical Activity, 3) Supporting WIC Staff, and 4) Community Involvement. From the data provided by participating agencies, the WIC programs in the health departments of Butler, Knox, Laclede, McDonald, Phelps, and Scotland Counties chose goals from all four categories. Five other agencies, WIC programs in the health departments of Joplin City and the counties of Morgan, Pettis, Schuyler, and Shelby, chose goals from three categories. These agencies have shown a high level of commitment for reversing the trend of ever-increasing rates of overweight among WIC children.
The following table shows a summary of state participation data, compiled at the beginning of the fiscal year from Local Agency Plans.
Conclusions:
- Many LWPs will adopt the state suggested goal/objective/activity, thus it is important to provide meaningful guidelines.
- The participation rate in the first year of Fit WIC Missouri was 53%.
- Eastern District LAPs indicated the highest participation rate at 92%.
- District nutritionists should monitor the LAPs for an inappropriate goal/objective/activity and redirect. Most inappropriate activities involved targeting only at-risk and overweight children.
