The New WIC: Food and Focus
Beginning October 2009, WIC is offering a new food package based on the healthy eating advice of the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Food Package Facts
- WIC foods help to improve the nutrition and health status of the nation’s low-income pregnant women, new mothers, infants and young children.
- WIC families will have more variety to help make smart choices. The new package offers fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat milk and baby food in addition to cereal, eggs, juice, peanut butter and beans.
- The food packages help support WIC’s nutrition education messages, better promote and support successful long-term breastfeeding and provide more variety of foods.
- Foods included in the food packages are lower in fat and cholesterol, higher in fiber and limit added sugar and sodium.
- To help lower the amount of saturated fat, cholesterol and total fat the WIC food packages provide and to help control costs, some participants will receive less milk, eggs and juice.
