Darrel Lang’s 16th Annual Risky Behaviors and Teens Regional Conference New!

June 8 @ 8:00 am - June 9 @ 5:00 pm in KCMO at the Hilton Kansas City Airport hotel.

Designed for teachers, school nurses, counselors and anyone who works with youth in schools and communities, the Risky Behaviors and Teens Regional Conference provides the latest science, resources, and strategies for working with young people. The Office of Adolescent Health (OAH) in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has developed a national call to action entitled, Adolescent Health: Think, Act, Grow (TAG). The national call to action is to improve health, reduce risky behavior, and to promote engagement and healthy development among young people. The adolescent years (ages 10-24) and the transition to young adulthood are important times for promoting current and life-long health.

A Rare Opportunity - Midwest Autism Conference

Internationally-known author, speaker and clinician Tony Attwood will be making six US appearances in October, 2016, The Judevine Center for Autism and the Missouri Institute of Mental Health are very excited that one of them will be for the Midwest Autism Conference on Monday, October 17 at the St. Charles (MO) Convention Center.

Over 400,000 people in more than 25 languages have gained insight from Asperger's Syndrome - A Guide for Parents and Professionals.   His 2006 book, The Complete Guide to Asperger’s Syndrome, became one of the primary textbooks on Asperger’s syndrome. There have been many other books, papers and articles as well.

Professor Attwood writes about what he knows. He is an experienced clinician, having worked with thousands and thousands of people on the Autism Spectrum, their families, and advocates. In fact, if you visit his website, you can experience some of the many aspects of Asperger's Syndrome through poetry submitted by other visitors.

Two Important Topics

Professor Attwood will bring two very important presentations to the Midwest Autism Conference:

  1. Strategies to Reduce Being Bullied or Teased, because children with Asperger's are much more likely to be bullied than other children; and,
  2. Managing Challenging Behavior in Children with Autism, which will provide an explanation and strategies with regard to repetitive behavior, emotion management and the development of effective communication systems for emotions.

Trained Diabetes Personnel in Missouri Schools (Cade’s Law)-Webinar
This webinar is designed as a resource for school nurses throughout the state. The purpose of this webinar is to provide school nurses in Missouri with a framework for training staff as Trained Diabetes Personnel (TDP). House Bill 675, passed and signed into law in 2013, provides an opportunity for Missouri public schools to train staff to assist in the care of students with diabetes while at school. Although this is optional for schools and districts, the intent is to help support student learning by ensuring safe and effective diabetes management for students at school
