Pregnancy and Beyond

At birth, babies are very nearsighted and can only focus on objects that are 8 to 15 inches away. Things that are farther away are blurred. Although newborns are able to pay attention to patterns and shapes, they like looking at faces more than other objects.

As the first weeks go by, your baby's ability to see and to focus improves. A colorful mobile and other toys are fun for your baby to watch. But the human face is the best stimulation for your baby's eyes. Take time to talk to your new baby, face to face. It will be a learning process for him and an enjoyable experience for you. And, before your baby is 2 months of age, he will reward you with his first smile.
