Data Elements

CDC developed standardized questions that are used by states and also by CDC in administering a national YRBS that allows comparison of state and national data. Data are collected on the leading causes of morbidity and mortality of youth.

Questions were added to the 2013 Missouri survey to also obtain data about tobacco use and related issues that had previously been collected from high school students on the Youth Tobacco Survey. This allows trends to be identified in areas such as lifetime and current use of cigarettes and smokeless tobacco, quit attempts, access to tobacco products, influences to use tobacco, exposure to secondhand smoke, and policies limiting exposure to secondhand smoke.
