Hospitalizations

The total number of resident discharges from hospitals during the period indicated for self-inflicted injuries. Because some people may be admitted more than once, the number of hospital discharges is greater than the number of people they represent. Some of the people admitted to the hospital for self-inflicted injuries will have died in the hospital and they would also be counted as deaths from suicide because hospitalizations and deaths are not mutually exclusive groupings. Discharges and emergency room visits are mutually exclusive; patients who are admitted to the hospital through the emergency room will be represented in the discharge data but not the emergency room data.

International Classification of Diseases (ICD-9) codes E950-E959.

The total number of resident hospital emergency room visits during the period indicated for self-inflicted injuries. Because some people may visit more than once, the number of emergency room visits is greater than the number of people they represent. Some of the people who visited the emergency room for self-inflicted injuries will have died in the emergency room and they would also be counted as deaths from suicide because hospitalizations and deaths are not mutually exclusive groupings.
