- Risk of stereotyping. Male victims, like child victims, often chose not to report that they have been a victim of sexual assault. Males are concerned with being stereotyped (Ellis, 2002). They may feel that being victims of sexual assault compromises their manhood.
Strategies to address these considerations:
- Increase knowledge and awareness. Information for male sexual assault victims and the effect the assault has on them should become a focus just as female victims are a focus. This may increase the availability of resources and treatment options for men. It may also increase the chances that men who have been victimized will want to seek help, and therefore, will more likely report the abuse.
