Population considerations:
- Increased risk not always identified. There are some genetic syndromes that are associated with a significant increase in one’s risk for colorectal cancer. Nevertheless, healthcare providers often fail to identify those at greatest risk for disease (Maradiegue, 2008).
Strategies to address these considerations:
- Improve provider competence. Providers should be taught the importance of checking a patient’s family history. The extended family history is the first step in recognizing an individual’s risk level (Maradiegue, 2008).
