MO HIT Assistance Center Advisory: Privacy & Security Webinar/Audio Conference October 12th

Columbia, MO—If you have an EHR or plan to implement one soon, the privacy and security of those electronic health records should be at the top of your checklist.  Although you may turn to EHR and IT vendors to help you establish the basic mechanisms to safeguard this data, the on-going security and privacy of this information largely rests on the individuals who input and access this data each day, people like you.

According to a report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), carelessness, not computer hacking, is the number one threat to health record security in our country.  So your thoughtful and careful handling and use of electronic health records, computers, and electronic devices can greatly impact the safety of this information and reduce the risk of a breach in your practice.

On Wednesday, October 12, Missouri Health Information Technology Assistance Center will present “EHR Privacy and Security” a Webinar and audio conference to help providers build a basic understanding on this issue.  Rebecca Thurmond Fowler, a system security analyst-principal for the Division of Information Technology, the central IT department at the University of Missouri – Columbia will cover a document created for the MO HIT Assistance Center to help organizations identify and correct weaknesses in the area of information security. Fowler will discuss the use of checklists and how your organization’s answers can reveal holes in your security program.  This type of assessment can help administrators ensure that their organization is in compliance with applicable federal and state laws.  The free presentation will begin at 11:30 am and will include a short discussion about risk assessment methodology and will include examples from the University of Missouri.
