Research shows that all of us prefer plain language to complex language and that we are more likely to read, understand, and carry out behaviors when they are presented in plain language. This training will explain the importance and benefits of plain language, and will also provide an overview of the main plain language principles, including:

  • Focus – making your purpose and intended audience clear at first glance
  • Structure – organizing your document so readers can find what they need
  • Content – making words and numbers easier to understand
  • Design – making your document appealing and easy to read through clear layout and graphics
  • Behavior – giving clear action steps to readers

Workshop 2:  Date: April 27, 2016 Location: Primaris, 200 N Keene St, Columbia, MO 65201   Time:  9.30 A.M. – 12.30 P.M.

Workshop 2 – “Applying Plain Language Skills to Materials”

This workshop begins with an introduction to the concept of numeracy, and then offers in-depth immersion into the foundational principles of plain language. This workshop is designed to build participants’ skills through hands-on, tailored activities and discussions, including editing their own materials.

Workshop 3:  Date:   May 24   Location:  Primaris, 200 N Keene St, Columbia, MO 65201   Time:  9.30 A.M. – 12.30 P.M.

November 3, 2015

Through a training session on the FREE NATIONAL HEALTHCARE DATA PORTAL, participants will be able to answer the following questions:

  •  Is there equitable disparity across all of the professions in rural vs. urban workforce distribution?  Or are there areas truly at more risks than others?
  • Where are the patients needing the greatest care?
  • How different are the socio-economic determinants in my area relative to surrounding states?
  • How will aging workforce impact access to care?
  • Are healthcare training opportunities available in rural?
  • How can healthcare leaders be more effective in targeting healthcare workforce distribution and training especially in light of implementing the Affordable Care Act?

This training session will be provided by Ann Peton, Director of the National Center for the Analysis of Healthcare Data (NEAHD), at our next RHW workshop. Ann Peton will provide a session on how to use mapping and spatial data analysis to further support the outcomes of the National Center for Rural Health Works (RHW).  In addition to the training, Ms. Peton will provide a jump drive with step-by-step instructions on how to access, view, map and analyze healthcare data, demographic, political, health outcome, healthcare workforce trends (2008-2014) available through the free national healthcare data portal.

The National Center for Rural Health Works (RHW) is presenting the RHW workshop on Thursday, December 3, 2015, and the New England Rural Health RoundTable is hosting the workshop at the Southbridge Hotel and Conference Center at 14 Mechanic St., Southbridge, MA 01550; phone: 508-765-8000 or 844-600-2719. The RHW workshop will also enable participants to measure the economic impact of the health sector or individual health entities on zip code service areas, counties, regions, states or at the national level. Additionally, participants will learn about RHW’s community health needs assessment toolkit (CHNA) and about specific community rural health needs assessments.

The training is designed for professionals from agencies that plan to be involved in providing assistance to communities in any of these three areas. Enrollment will be limited to 20-25 participants and will be “First Come, First Serve. Each participant receives a packet of selected materials and a CD with all materials.
